Katrina-Mae "Kawa" Teaño, also known as ProcGenKawa (short for Procedurally Generated Kawa), is a Filipino-American game producer, project manager, and developer. They were the producer for Friday Night Funkin' and a project and administrative manager for The Funkin' Crew Inc. from January 2023 to April 2025. They were mainly responsible for controlling update statuses, administrative support for The Funkin' Crew, and merchandise shipping. They also did some work on HaxeFlixel for the game's programming.[1]
Involvement
Around November and December 2022, ninjamuffin99 and PhantomArcade realized that they needed a person that could help the two manage production of Friday Night Funkin', as well as other administrative tasks for The Funkin' Crew Inc., like emails and paperwork. Throughout December, the team went to look for people until they managed to find someone who was recommended to them; they later held an interview with that person at the end of the month, and would begin to work with their new producer and project manager in late January 2023.[2] This person was revealed to be Kawa, who announced in a Twitter thread on the 5th of January that they would become a full-time producer on Friday Night Funkin' by the end of the month.[3] According to Kawa, this opportunity was given to them by Xalavier Nelson Jr., founder of the Strange Scaffold video game company, which Kawa previously freelanced for; this likely indicates that Nelson was the one who recommended Kawa to The Funkin' Crew.[4] Although their involvement officially began in January, it would not be made public until the 17th of February.[5] In April 2025, Kawa left the company.
Trivia
- Kawa's alias "Procedurally Generated Kawa" refers to procedural generation, a method of algorithmic data creation. This alias is presumably a reference to their involvement in procedural generation communities, including Roguelike Celebration and the Society for Internet Blaseball Research, with procedural generation being one of Kawa's interests in game development.
- Moreover, the name "Kawa" may have been derived from one of their previous Internet aliases, "KawaiiDragoness".
- Kawa previously engaged in direct volunteering and outreach to multisexual communities in New York City.
