Week 5, titled Red Snow, is the fifth week and sixth level overall in Friday Night Funkin'. It was released on January 20, 2021.

Overview

Opponents

Boyfriend faces off against both Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest, the parents of Girlfriend. Later, Boyfriend also faces off against Monster, the unsettling being with a lemon-like head fought once before.

Location

Week 5 takes place at the Christmas Mall, whose stage has two variants: Nice[1] and Naughty.[2]

For the Nice variant, the location is inside of a well-lit shopping center with a large dome skylight showing a starry night sky. A large, decorated Christmas tree stands in the middle and snow covers the floor. Many characters spectate the rap battle from either the ground or second floor. A mall Santa is being held at gunpoint close by where the battle is occurring, sweating profusely with a panicked expression on his face.

For the Naughty variant, the location undergoes a drastic and creepy shift as the shopping center becomes largely abandoned and dimly lit in a red glow. The Christmas tree is now decorated with intestines, covered in blood and has a decapitated head in place of the star, one that eerily resembles Girlfriend but with a shadowed face, red facial features and blood around the eyes and mouth. The snow is tinted pink. Large amounts of blood stain the solid railing of the second floor, and the bottom of the escalators seem to be covered in something organic and flesh-like.

Remixed Visuals

During Erect mode and player character remixes, new and different characters are now in the audience watching the rap battle. The background also gets new lighting and extra mist slightly obscures the Christmas tree; this new lighting also affects characters, who receive a much brighter shift in their saturation.

Unique Effects

The playable character, their supporting character, and the opponents of the level all have different appearances to fit the week's Christmas/Holiday theme.

Trivia

  • The first two tracks of Week 5 include a plethora of cameos, most of which are heavily tied to Newgrounds. (Cameos are listed from left to right.)
  • In Erect and in the player character remixes, there are other character cameos, most of which are also closely associated with Newgrounds. (Cameos are listed from left to right.)
  • Week 5 is the first level to:
    • Alter the appearance of the characters.
    • Feature previous opponents.
    • Alter the appearance of the location for one of the tracks.
    • Use a unique transition for one of the tracks.
    • Use a previously unused opponent.
  • In a live stream from before the Week 5 update, PhantomArcade showed a sneak peek of what seems to be unused transition audio between the songs Eggnog and Winter Horrorland. In this audio, a gunshot can be heard, people scream in despair, and a character laughs at the end.[3]
  • Before the Week 7 update, Week 5 was the first level to officially include a track not produced by Kawai Sprite (as Winter Horrorland was produced by Bassetfilms).
  • Monster and Hatsune Miku are the only background characters not to be changed/replaced in the remixed visuals, remaining in the same location and using the same graphic, only changing colors.
    • Darnell also reappears in the remixed look, changing locations, appearing on the second floor and replacing Pico. Darnell also has an updated design.
  • The background contains shops with joke store signs. These signs read "Salads and Sex," "Lmao," "Junk+Shit" and "Crap!"
  • evilsk8r had originally intended for Rolus, the main character from the upcoming Newgrounds game Rolus in the Outskirts, to be included in the background.[4] This was because of a deal made with a longtime friend, shpill.[5] Ultimately, Rolus did not make it into PhantomArcade's final cut of the background for reasons unknown. The different things shown within the concept art sketches include:
    • A plush stand with Rolus.
    • Differently named store signs, such as "SK8R SHOP", "KB Store" and "Ninja Muffin".
    • Two posters, one that simply reads "Hi Blade" and the other being a picture of ninjamuffin99's character.
  • The original medal name for beating Week 5 was going to be "FNF Corruption Mod (real)", referencing the popular Friday Night Funkin': Corruption mod created by Phantom Fear.[6]
