Lucky Boy
― Lucky, LUCKYBOY
Lucky, alternatively referred to as Lucky Boy, was a character who appeared within the Friday Night Funkin' game files.
Appearance
Lucky is a living sock creature with black freckles and eyes. He wears a backward teal hat and has blue and red stripes on the lower part of his off-white body. He plays a red Gretsch Bo Diddley guitar. In all of his animations, yellow zigzags appear around him.
Origin
Lucky is the protagonist of LUCKYBOY, a mixed media animated short film created and directed by Domenic "DOMROM" Romano, and produced by Brandon "BrandyBuizel" Driesse, along with many other creators working on it, published on Newgrounds on the 25th of December, 2021. The film is about Lucky trying to win over his crush, Brooke, and his struggles at the pizzeria he works for, Pizza Masturbatio, and in life in general.
Personality
Lucky is highly anxious and shy, and he is seen to not like confrontation, as he immediately blushes whenever Brooke approaches him and has a hard time asking Boss for an advance. He prefers to bottle up his emotions, as he does not express his frustration and anger towards Boss. Lucky may also be depressed, given his terrible condition at work and the low wages he earns, not being enough to pay rent, and not even having the confidence to have a conversation with his mother on the phone.
Lucky is also extremely ambitious, as he spends an entire suitcase of money to buy the guitar he always wanted to impress Brooke with, even at the cost of getting attacked by Street Thugs.
He may also be distracted and not up-to-date with things, as he was unaware of his friend Dono's band "Murder-Dick" (only learning about it after seeing Brooke's shirt) and didn't know that his co-worker, Jason, was actually his manager.
Despite his shyness, Lucky is very humble, as he compliments Brooke's shirt and did not even complain after finding out she was already taken, instead thanking her girlfriend for calling him rad.
Trivia
General
- According to ninjamuffin99, Lucky was never meant to be in Friday Night Funkin' at all. An itch.io user addressed the character by bringing up both Lucky's sprite sheet and an associated audio file called "vidyagames.ogg" (a low-quality cut of "Video Games" by Black Out Band with a song length similar to that of the game's official songs). ninjamuffin99 responded stating, "OOPS this was put in by my boy Brandy, i guess he snuck it in and i didnt even notice. I'm takin' it out since its not officially a part of the game!"[2]
- The red guitar Lucky Boy plays is a still image of a Gretsch Bo Diddley signature model.
Lore
- Lucky's favorite food is pizza.
- Lucky seems to have a huge dislike for acoustic guitars.
- According to his files shown in the scene where he is talking to Boss:
- Lucky is sexless, as his sex is labeled as "definitely zero".
- Lucky is described as a "white boy sock".
- Lucky is not allowed to leave work early.
- Lucky almost never arrives late to work, as Boss won't allow it. The one time he did was when his grandmother died the day before, but Boss was immediate to dismiss this saying "people die every day", causing Lucky to break down crying.
- According to LUCKYBOY's Newgrounds description, Lucky lives in Boston.
Inspirations
- LUCKYBOY's core inspiration was Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the film adaptation of the graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim.[6] Lucky himself shares many similarities to the titular protagonist, as his ambition to do everything to impress Brooke is similar to how Scott will do anything to win the love of Ramona Flowers. In addition to this, Brooke may be inspired by Ramona, due to their goth aesthetic and their role as the love interest. Another similarity with Scott Pilgrim is Lucky's passion to play the electric guitar, which is possibly a reference to Scott being a bassist.
- Additionally, the LUCKYBOY soundtrack may also take inspiration from the soundtrack of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
