Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game is the current title for the full version of Friday Night Funkin'. The game's Kickstarter campaign ran for a month until its closing on May 18, 2021, 5:31pm EDT.

Overview

Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game is a project created by the developers of Friday Night Funkin', ninjamuffin99, PhantomArcade, Kawai Sprite and evilsk8r, who would go on to found The Funkin' Crew Inc. and are currently its shareholders. The announcement of the project's Kickstarter campaign was made on April 18, 2021, coinciding with the release of Week 7 as a Newgrounds exclusive.

The campaign's original funding goal was $60,000 (USD), which it reached in the first 2 hours of its public announcement. Adding onto that, it surpassed over $1,000,000 in pledges in the first 3 days. After the campaign had closed, it had officially funded a total of $2,247,641 by 58,561 backers.

The full game has not been given a formal release date outside of guesses from the developers, but it is known that the game will show up on Steam two weeks before it is released.[2] ninjamuffin99 also stated in 2021 that the full game would not arrive for a few more years and that April 2022 was the rough timeframe with the original $60,000 Kickstarter budget goal in mind.[3]

Initial Goal Plan

The following content is planned for the complete base game within the scope of the $60,000 goal:

20 New Weeks
3 songs for each new week, totaling 60 new tracks.
New Gameplay Mechanics
New ideas/concepts for expanding gameplay and creating more unique levels. (A "battle mode" is hinted to be one of these ideas as the animation of Boyfriend throwing his microphone is referenced.)
Cutscenes
Animated cartoon-esque sequences that take place during and out of gameplay, similar in execution to the cutscenes in Week 6 and Week 7, to expand the game's world and provide some context to the levels.
Local 2 Player
Play with or against a friend.
New Playable Characters
Play as other characters apart from Boyfriend in Freeplay or 2-player mode. Characters will have their own unique poses and voices, the latter of which changes the music's vocal track by replacing Boyfriend's voice. In 2-player mode, the same will occur for the opponent's voice.
Online Leaderboards
View the top scores for every song and difficulty level from players around the world as well as friends.
Polished Visuals and Interface
Improvements to visuals such as menus and basic additions such as a results screen.
Robust Mod Support
Make the game simple and inviting to mod.
Custom Song Charting Interface
Create custom, playable charts through an in-game chart maker for any audio file put into the game.
Translations
Support for as many languages as possible to allow fans from all over the world to enjoy the game.
Artist, Musician and Voice Acting Collaborations as Well as Cameos
Unique art style shifts, new playable characters, cameo appearances and voice acting from potential game contributors.

Web Version Updates

As ninjamuffin99 corroborated in a Tweet, the versions of Friday Night Funkin' currently on Newgrounds and itch.io will continue to receive future updates during development of the full game. Though the updates will contain some of the levels and tracks intended for the full game, players will not be able to experience all there is to offer through the web versions alone. The full experience will only be found with the release of the complete game, which players must purchase.[4]

Trivia

  • PhantomArcade posted a teaser of the Kickstarter trailer on March 3, 2021, while not revealing what the trailer was about.[6]
  • The news of the game's Kickstarter campaign had been accidentally leaked weeks ahead of its announcement in a news article by 100 Mile Free Press.[7][8]
  • In a caption for one of the images in the Kickstarter page, Girlfriend is misspelled as "Girlfried."
  • Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game has been one of the fastest-grossing Kickstarters to ever be supported, overtaking similar games that were funded via Kickstarter like A Hat in Time and Cyanide & Happiness: Freakpocalypse.
    • ninjamuffin99 admitted that the Kickstarter was inspired by how much the Kickstarter for Homestuck made and how fast it grew in popularity.[citation needed]
  • 20 new weeks have been promised in the Kickstarter trailer. With stretch goals reached, an additional 25 weeks (15 regular weeks and 10 epilogue weeks) were also said to be added. Adding the 7 weeks that had already been implemented by the time the Kickstarter campaign was launched, the 20 new planned weeks and the 25 stretch goal weeks brings the total number of weeks in the game to 52, or, in other words, 1 year.
    • However, in a Twitter Space, PhantomArcade said that 60+ weeks are planned for the game. He also stated that there are probably more ideas for concepts and mechanics than the developers actually have time to implement throughout the 60+ planned levels.[9]
  • The Nightmare AU, despite not having reached its stretch goal, was confirmed to make an appearance in the game regardless by PhantomArcade on Twitter.[10]
  • The song used in the trailer, Klaskii Romper, is from Kawai Sprite's Bandcamp album Plop!, on which it is the 6th track.[11]
    • It can also be heard in the cutscene for Stress.
    • Interestingly, Kawai Sprite had originally made a special song specifically for the Kickstarter trailer. However, this song was scrapped as PhantomArcade felt as it didn't match the overall intended vibe of the trailer, so he used Klaskii Romper in its place instead.[12] The song Kawai Sprite originally made has yet to be released.
  • Needlejuice Records is the manufacturer for the physical albums of the game's soundtrack. They initially announced the production of the first volume on April 8, 2021 on Twitter, with PhantomArcade soon confirming the collaboration later in a Tweet of his own.[13][14]
  • In the Kickstarter trailer, there's a section dedicated to celebrating the community, where many popular Friday Night Funkin' mods and fan-characters are shown. The characters and mods highlighted are, in order of appearance:
    • OR3O, replacing Girlfriend in Friday Night Funkin': CG5 Edition
    • Whitty, an original character seen in V.S. Whitty Full Week
    • Friday night funkin, but bad
    • Monika, as seen in Monika (DDLC) - New Song + Default Senpai Reskin, and Dalia, an original character replacing Girlfriend, seen alongside Monika and appearing in Funkin' with Dalia
    • GenderSwap BF over GF, GenderSwap GF over BF and GenderSwap Pico, all showcased together
    • CoryxKenshin and Momo, as seen in Coryxkenshin and Momo girlfriend mod
    • Ronald McDonald, as seen in an eponymous mod, and XOXO, an original character replacing Boyfriend, seen alongside Ronald McDonald and appearing in XOXO Boyfriend skin
    • Fresh (SiIvaGunner)
    • Bopeebo (In-Game Version) (SiIvaGunner)
    • Baldi, as seen in Baldi over Week 6
    • Hatsune Miku, as seen in an eponymous mod
    • South (SiIvaGunner)
    • Blammed (SiIvaGunner)
    • Tulio Triviño, as seen in the Tulio Triviño from 31 Minutos mod
    • Friday Night Funkin’ Clay Mod
    • FL-chan, as seen in the similarly titled mod FL Chan
    • Hex, from VS Hex Mod
    • Lila, as seen in Lila over Daddy Dearest, ENA, as seen in ENA over Boyfriend (Playable ENA), and Chara, as seen in Chara - From UNDERTALE/ DONTFORGET, all showcased together
    • Friday Night Funkin': Corruption
    • Friday Night Funkin: Neo
    • Henry Stickmin, as seen in a YouTube video titled "FRIDAY NIGHT FUNKIN' mod HENRY STICKMIN over BF (WIP)"
    • Ayana, from Ex-GF Over Mom Mod + New Song
    • Beach Brother, from an eponymous mod
    • Tricky the Clown, as seen in a teaser for a then-upcoming update to The Tricky Mod
    • B-Side Remixes
    • Friday Night Funkin' Minus
    • Multiple other forms of unofficial Friday Night Funkin' media are also shown off in the trailer, including a clip of some of the characters in VRChat, a knockoff racing game and several titles for videos on YouTube.
      • One of the video titles included is a Lost Bits video by TetraBitGaming.[15] Interestingly, an unused doodle in Tankman's lip sync Flash file vulgarly insults TetraBitGaming in its title. The doodle in question, titled "suck your moms dick tetra bit gaming", depicts a creature with spikes on their chest and belly who is labeled "you're mom."[16] In a live stream that PhantomArcade did in late 2022, he expressed frustration about TetraBitGaming's disclosure of unused concept sketches from Flash files, which led PhantomArcade to have to scrap the unused stalker designs due to modders tracing the characters before they could be used officially.[17]
  • In the Kickstarter trailer, when the segment for Week 7 is shown, the Tankmen that point their guns at Girlfriend are not seen, and Girlfriend herself isn't holding her arms up.
  • Digital Steam keys will be given out to each backer that pledged enough money to obtain the game.
  • The full game's estimated price is planned to be between $20 and $30,[18] though the source code will remain available for free on GitHub.[19] Additionally, ninjamuffin99 encourages players to pirate the game if they cannot afford it.[20]
